On Shanklin High Street there's a new smell in the air — beef hitting a screaming-hot grill, pressed flat, edges crisped. That's the smash.

Shanklin Smash Co opened in February 2026 and within months was a finalist for Best Burger at the Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards. The menu is short. The burgers are not.

The smash burger has one rule: maximum contact between beef and heat. The patty hits the grill, gets pressed flat, and the Maillard reaction does the rest — crispy lace edges, juicy centre.

Shanklin Smash Co keeps it simple: quality beef, proper cheese, fresh buns, and sides worth the trip on their own — loaded fries buried under toppings, onion rings with real crunch.

It's a small shop with a short menu and a big reputation already. The island noticed fast.

"Best burger on the island, no contest."

Why smash?

Flat. Crispy. Gone in minutes.

The new burger joint on the High Street.

Chapter 01

The smash

A ball of beef meets a ripping-hot grill. Ten seconds of pressure. What comes out is thin, lacy at the edges, and deeply savoury — more crust per bite than any thick patty can manage.

Double it up if you're serious. The cheese goes on while the second side crisps, so it melts into every ridge.

Chapter 02

The sides

Fries are a starting point, not an afterthought. Loaded fries come buried — cheese, sauces, toppings, the works.

Onion rings arrive in a proper stack: thick-cut, golden, shattering crunch. Order them even if you think you don't want them.

Chapter 03

The award

Six months after opening, Shanklin Smash Co was named a finalist for Best Burger at the Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards 2026.

Not bad for a new kid on the High Street. The island's burger scene has a new benchmark.
